Another Day of Fun @ Milo Mclver State Park

This day is the day that we get to play Milo Mclver; the #1 rated disc golf course in all of Oregon; the site of the professional 2024 Beaver State Fling. The same site where Philo Brathwaite (esteemed guest at Adam’s brother Joe’s wedding) scored an elusive albatross known as the “The Philo-batross” to those in the disc golf community. But first, we had to get to get there.

We packed up camp and made our way south. We elected to suffer the monotonous interstate (I5) in order to maximize our time at Milo Mclver. While driving on the interstate Helen listened to trance music and practiced her meditation. While Adam clinged to the handle bars in excitement and tried to sit still in order to not shake the bike.

After a couple hours of boredom we made it to Portland area. We stopped at Chipotle for lunch, went to REI to restock our dehydrated meals, and did a quick grocery run. Then finally, we rode the last 30 minutes to Milo Mclver State Park, which conveniently also had a campground.  Upon arriving to the campground Helen decided it was best to set up camp. Adam decided it was best to practice patience.

The moment we started setting up camp, a friendly stranger of retirement age used our motorcycles as an invitation to come chat (a not uncommon event). Helen maintains Adam’s friendly face isn’t helping either. The man shared long stories of riding through the Santa Cruz mountains and their talked about their extensive motorcycle collection. After some time they went back to their camp and left us with some words of wisdom “it’s ok to get arrested just don’t get convicted.“

After 3300 miles, several chores, and small talk with a stranger it was finally time to play Milo. We walked to the disc golf course and Adam immediately threw all 6 of his disc into an open field to warm up. 2 of his discs landed in a dense thicket. Which required Helen’s scientist eyes to recover; unfortunately 1 disc was never recovered. Down one disc we started the round with Helen acting as caddie.

We’ll spare you the stroke-by-stroke breakdown but the course was incredible. Adam threw average shot after average shot and Helen foraged snacks:

Adam basked in the beautiful sound of disc hitting chains:

Helen listened to the beautiful sounds of birds and captured the thud of Adam’s disc missing the basket. (Note that she thought this was a celebratory noise)

After playing through all 27 holes it was time for dinner. So, we went back to camp, made spaghetti and meatballs; both content to have enjoyed another day of fun with each other.
